Rangers caretaker manager Kenny McDowall struggled to find any positives after the 4-0 thrashing at Hibernian.

Hibs secured their biggest victory over Rangers since 1912 as a turbulent Christmas period for the troubled Glasgow giants continued.

In a week where manager Ally McCoist was placed on gardening leave and serious concerns were raised about the running of the club at a stormy AGM, caretaker-manager McDowall's reign got off to an inauspicious start.

It was Rangers' fourth consecutive away defeat and McDowall admitted he could hardly have got off to a worse start.

"I'm hugely disappointed, especially for our support who were here today. Obviously finding yourself 2-0 down after 12 minutes isn't an ideal start," he said. "I think the best team won and I don't have any excuses at all.

“Normally you get a response when there is a change in management but that didn’t happen for us today. I can’t take anything away from Hibs, they were the better team and wanted it more than us today.

“It’s very easy to say we should have responded differently when we went a goal down and yes things should have been different.

“We’ll have a wee look at it on Monday but we are disappointed with all elements today, especially the outcome. The only positive I can take at this moment is that we managed to keep it to four but we’ll analyse the game next week.”

Hibernian have now completed the double over Rangers following their 3-1 win at Ibrox in September to close to within four points of the Gers in second place.

Manager Alan Stubbs said: "From the beginning to the end, it probably doesn't get much better than that. I feel the lads have just produced a complete performance.

"We dominated in every area of the field and the players deserve all the credit. The way we played today was outstanding, we scored some brilliant goals."
