Capital One Cup: Raheem Sterling is good enough to play up front, says Jamie Redknapp

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 17: Raheem Sterling of Liverpool celebrates scoring the opening goal during the Capital One Cup Quarter-Final match betwee

Jamie Redknapp believes Raheem Sterling can play as a striker for Liverpool, and can pose a real threat to opposition after seeing the England forward net a double against Bournemouth.

The 20-year-old played as the furthest man forward against Manchester United on Sunday, and spearheaded the Liverpool attack once again in the Capital One Cup quarter-final clash with the Cherries.

Sterling had recieved much criticism after missing several chances at Old Trafford, which boss Brendan Rodgers described as "incredible" after seeing his young attacker help Liverpool progress against the Championship side.

And Redknapp felt that Sterling showed he had put his profligacy aside effectively at the Goldsands Stadium, and showed his ability to adapt to the new role.

"I don’t care what centre-half you are, when you are facing that young man and he is running at you, you have got a real problem," Redkanpp said.

"I have said it before, but he is good enough to play anywhere he wants."

With Mario Balotelli not in the squad for the trip to the south coast, Redknapp feels that even with everyone fit, Rodgers should stick with Sterling as a forward, and thinks he could forge a prolific partnership with another Liverpool striker waiting in the wings.

"What he is up against at the moment in the form of Balotelli, Borini and Lambert, he is the best option," Redknapp added.

"When Sturridge comes back, both can kick on and we will see what happens."
