New Leyton Orient manager Fabio Liverani revealed his primary aim is to help the club avoid relegation - at an opening press conference translated by the man sacked to make way for him.

Former Orient boss Mauro Milanese, who will now revert to his role as sporting director, dutifully translated as his fellow Italian outlined how he plans to lift the club out of the trouble Milanese left them in.

The O’s have struggled this season since long-serving manager Russell Slade left to take over Cardiff City and find themselves in 19th position in Sky Bet League One, just three points above bottom-of-the-table Crewe Alexandra.

Leverani took charge of Genoa in June 2013 but was sacked by the Serie A side three months and seven games later after guiding the club just one victory.

Liverani admitted he has a difficult job on his hands at Brisbane Road but he is confident he will be afforded the time to turn the club’s fortunes around.

“It is very difficult obviously,” Liverani admitted. “I am coming here because the project is long-term, it is not short-term.

“Every manager needs time and for this I have been given a long contract so I have the chance to try to play well and to get points to scale the table this season.”

Liverani's first match in charge will be at home to Peterborough on Saturday.
