John Barnes has called for the Home Internationals to be reintroduced with next month's friendly between England and Scotland looming.

The 112th meeting of international football's oldest rivals will take place at Celtic Park on November 18 - live on Sky Sports - and former England winger Barnes believes the fixture is too rare an occurrence.

Barnes, 50, said: "The Scotland game is there to give them a reminder of the old days when England used to play Scotland on a regular basis.

"It will remind them of the old animosity when they go to Celtic Park - it's probably something they have never experienced before.

"I like the old Home Internationals when England played Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. It was good. They will be playing against some of their team-mates.

"They should bring that back because it's always good to play against your team-mates at international level, it's good for the players and fans because they can take part in the banter that football has to offer."

Barnes won 79 caps for England and played over 300 times for Liverpool and it's a current Reds winger, Raheem Sterling, who is seen as the leading light of Roy Hodgson's squad.

Barnes, however, is calling for caution.

"Let's not put too much expectation and pressure on a young boy's shoulders," he said.

"He has been one of the better Liverpool players but he has also been inconsistent because that is a reflection of the team and his youth and inexperience.

"I would be a much quicker and harsher judge of Raheem Sterling in five years' time when he has had four more years' experience.

"He has been Liverpool's best player in an inconsistent season."
