Chris Pontius and Eddie Johnson were both on target for D.C. United as they beat the Chicago Fire 2-1 in the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference on Saturday.

United stretched their unbeaten run to five games, the biggest single-season turnaround in MLS history, rebounding from last year's 24-loss season.

The first goal arrived on 31 minutes when Pontius headed a perfect cross from Johnson past Kyle Renish into the lower left corner.

Johnson doubled the lead eight minutes after the break when he fired a shot into the top left corner for his seventh goal of the season.

Harrison Shipp scored for Chicago in the 67th minute, but they were unable to draw level in the remainder of the match.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia Union beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1 with goals from Brian Brown and Pedro Ribeiro.

Brown opened the scoring in the 45th minute when he lost his marker in the box and poked Cristian Maidana's cross into the right corner of the net.

Ribeiro, who replaced Brown after 69 minutes, made a swift impact when he finished a cross from Maidana (71).

In between those goals, Dominic Dwyer converted a penalty in the 54th minute to Kansas City.

Elsewhere, the San Jose Earthquakes regained sole possession of the fifth and final Western Conference playoff spot after holding the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 0-0 draw.

The Whitecaps moved a point ahead of the Portland Timbers, who played a scoreless draw with Real Salt Lake on Friday, with each team having one game left. Next Saturday night, Vancouver is home against Colorado, and Portland is at FC Dallas.
