Leyton Orient have offered caretaker manager Kevin Nugent the vacant full-time position, Sky sources understand.

Russell Slade quit the post last week in order to facilitate a move to manage Cardiff before Nugent took charge of the O's 3-2 League One home defeat by Rochdale.

Nugent, after beginning his career at Orient, played for Plymouth Argyle, Bristol City, Cardiff City, Orient again and Swansea City in a 19-year period, scoring 115 league goals.

He became assistant manager to Kenny Jackett at Swansea and the pair masterminded the Welsh club's promotion from League Two in 2005.

Edmonton-born Nugent, 45, moved back to east London two years later to become No 2 to Geraint Williams in 2009.

Nugent was kept on to work alongside Slade in 2010, after Williams was sacked, for over four years before the Orient manager quit his post to reportedly broker a deal to take charge of the Bluebirds in the Welsh capital.

The Londoner has already revealed he wants the Orient job and said: "It is something that would certainly excite me but we'll have to wait and see.

"I've worked here a long time and I've done the youth team, scouting and all sorts. They will probably change the role to head coach. I'm sure there will be people interested as it's a fantastic job for anyone."

Meanwhile, the club's former chief executive Matt Porter has resigned from the board at Brisbane Road at the request of the new owners.

Porter had stayed on as a director following the recent takeover by Francesco Becchetti and remained a staunch supporter of Slade until he quit.

The news means Porter, who was appointed Orient chief executive by former chairman Barry Hearn in 2006 at the age of 26, must also resign from the Football League Board.
