Premier League: Manchester City keeper Willy Caballero wants to be No.1

Willy Caballero accepts his current position as Manchester City’s second-choice goalkeeper, but he is determined to put pressure on No.1 Joe Hart.

City signed Caballero from Malaga in the summer and the Argentinian started the Community Shield defeat by Arsenal last month.

However, Hart has been first choice in the Premier League and Caballero has watched on from the bench as City have won two, and lost one, of their opening three games.

Caballero, who played under City boss Manuel Pellegrini at Malaga, is aware of his role, but he insists he will not settle for being Hart’s understudy at the Etihad Stadium.

“I knew what the situation was before I came here but I think that I made the decision because I was joining a big club and one that was able to win trophies,” Caballero told the Sunday Telegraph.

“I also took the decision because I think that when you are inside a big team if you train well and you do well in games then you can play. You can be the No.1. I know that I am in the second spot right now. But if I do things well in training sessions then I can get the No.1 spot.

“I was No.1 with Manuel not so long ago at Malaga. I know what my position is right now but I will try and work and try to change that.

“The manager knows me but I did not expect him to hand me the No.1 shirt just because I came here.

“I hope that Joe Hart will continue to do great because that will be good for the team. But I will be ready and I will try to give the manager all the confidence back.

“I accept my position but also on a daily basis I train hard because we are competing and we want the manager to question himself as to who will be the No.1.”
