Brown Ideye has settled quickly at West Bromwich Albion and expects to improve as a player under the guidance of Alan Irvine.

The Nigeria international was taken to The Hawthorns over the summer in a club record £10million deal.

Delays in the completion of the necessary paperwork to formalise his move mean he is slightly behind some of his new team-mates in terms of match sharpness, following a disrupted pre-season.

He has good movement, he’s different to Victor Anichebe in that respect. He likes to make those runs, get behind people.

He offered enough during a second-half run-out against Southampton on Saturday, though, to suggest that he boasts all of the attributes required to be a Premier League frontman.

Ideye has complete faith in his own ability, but also feels that working with a highly-rated coach such as Irvine can only help his cause.

He said after making his debut at St Mary’s: “Alan Irvine is a great guy who talks to me every day and it’s difficult to find a manager who does that and know what you can improve on.

“I don’t think I’ll have a problem playing for him.”

Irvine is looking forward to bringing the best out of Ideye, with the 25-year-old having shown during spells in Switzerland, France and Ukraine that he has the potential to be a bit hit in England.

The West Brom boss said: “Brown is a good finisher.

“He has good movement, he’s different to Victor Anichebe in that respect. He likes to make those runs, get behind people. We saw a glimpse of what he can bring us (against Southampton).

“Full marks to him. He’s done very little training, he’s had no pre-season.

“Likewise Jason Davidson. We’ve got players on our bench who aren’t ready yet.”
