LA Galaxy forward Landon Donovan has confirmed he will retire at the end of the current MLS season.
The 32-year-old is the leading scorer in USA history, with 57 goals in 156 games for the national side.
Donovan played in three World Cups but was controversially left out of Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad for this summer’s tournament in Brazil.
He also had two successful loan spells in the Premier League with Everton but fared less well with two temporary periods in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.
Donovan took a break from the game at the start of last year, saying he was struggling to find motivation and needed some time away from football, and has now decided to call time on his illustrious career.
"After careful deliberation and many conversations with those closest to me, I have decided that this will be my last year as a professional soccer player," Donovan told LA Galaxy's official website.
"It has been more than anything I could have dreamed of to represent the LA Galaxy, the San Jose Earthquakes, Everton, U.S. Soccer and Major League Soccer throughout my career."
Galaxy play their final game of the regular season on October 25.
