Winger set for home debut against Serbia at the weekend

Matt Phillips cannot wait for his first taste of Hampden Park on Saturday - and is targeting a World Cup finals appearance with Scotland. The Blackpool winger is hoping to make his home bow against Serbia after being handed a debut in the 5-1 defeat against the United States in Florida last month. The 21-year-old has heard all about the Hampden atmosphere and is hoping Scotland can make a flying start to their campaign with tough qualifiers against Serbia and Macedonia coming up. "I have yet to experience the atmosphere of Hampden Park but I know from speaking to people who have experienced it that it is something special," Phillips told the Scottish FA official website. "I can't wait for these games to come and the preparation starts now. "The supporters will be huge for us in these two opening games. I have heard all about the Hampden Roar and I can't wait to hear it for myself on Saturday.

Fans

"The players will be doing everything they can to get off to a good start and the fans can definitely make a difference. "I wouldn't like to walk out of the tunnel knowing our opponents have that kind of backing." Scotland have a daunting group that also includes Belgium, Wales and Croatia but Phillips' aim is to be playing for his country in Brazil in 2014. He added: "France '98 was the first World Cup I remember as a kid and, of course, who can forget seeing the whole Scotland squad come on the pitch in their kilts before their game against Brazil? "That is something that every player dreams of, to play in the opening game of a World Cup finals and obviously our aim is to get back to that stage again and qualify for the finals in Brazil."
