Sky Sports understands Darel Russell is set to move to Portsmouth after leaving Preston at the end of last season.
The midfielder is a free agent and has spent the summer on trial at Stevenage, but turned down a deal with the Hertfordshire club to move to the South Coast.
Russell was part of the Norwich side that won League One in 2009/10 before joining Preston.
He spent time last season on loan at Charlton, where he made 11 appearances as they claimed the League One title.
The 31-year-old started his career at Norwich, before spending four years away from Carrow Road with Stoke City. He made 171 appearances for the Potters before returning to East Anglia.
