American midfielder wants to continue turning out at top level

Maurice Edu is keen to test himself at the highest possible level and admits he may be forced to escape the ongoing turmoil at Rangers. The United States midfielder was not among the 13 players who reported for pre-season training on Thursday, with international commitments having seen him granted an extended break. He has a year left to run on his contract at Ibrox, with Charles Green's Sevco consortium having acquired the rights to that deal. Edu is, however, free to negotiate a move away from the Old Firm giants under the terms of the wage cuts accepted by a number of senior stars in February. He has hinted that will look to take advantage of that exit clause, with Rangers expected to line up in either the Scottish First or Third Division next season as a result of their financial troubles and subsequent liquidation. Edu told foxsoccer.com: "I'm no different than anyone else. You want to go as far as you can in this game. You want to see how far you can go. It's a short career, you know?

Ambitions

"You want to try and play at the highest levels possible and test yourself against some of the best players. "Those are things I definitely have ambitions to do and goals I have set for myself." While events at Ibrox in recent months have made life difficult for all concerned, Edu insists he has no regrets at having linked up with the Glasgow-based club back in 2008. "I've been pleased with the way things have gone for me in Scotland," he said. "Being able to play in the Champions League, win trophies, win medals, win cups, win leagues. These are things that I have dreamt of doing, and I set as goals for myself when I came to this club. "I wanted to be involved in all those kind of things and to know that when my time there was finished I would have these things to look back on."
