Cod Army closing on Colchester striker

Sky Sports understands that Football League newcomers Fleetwood Town are close to concluding a deal for Colchester forward Steven Gillespie. The 27-year-old enjoyed a productive season in front of goal in 2011/12, as he netted on 12 occasions in all competitions. That return represents only the second time in his career that he has broken into double figures, but it is the consistency of his displays which has drawn admiring glances from afar. Fleetwood believe Gillespie would be a useful addition to their ranks, as they prepare to make their League bow. The ambitious outfit believe they are capable of pushing for back-to-back promotions, but appreciate that they need to bring experienced heads on board if they are to challenge. Stepping down from the third tier to the fourth may appear like a step backwards for Gillespie, but Fleetwood are not planning on hanging around in League Two for long.
