QPR closing on capture of experienced centre-half

Sky Sports understands that Ryan Nelsen will undergo a medical at Queens Park Rangers in the next 24 hours after seeing a short-term deal at Tottenham come to an end. The experienced centre-half moved to White Hart Lane in January on a six-month agreement. He was drafted in by Harry Redknapp to provide defensive cover and made five appearances for the club in all competitions. Blackburn agreed to let him leave as a free agent after seeing him struggle with injuries towards the end of his stay at Ewood Park.

Fitness

The 34-year-old has, however, proved his fitness at Spurs and is closing on a switch to Loftus Road. QPR are in the market for experienced heads as they attempt to avoid suffering from second-season syndrome. They just about avoided relegation out of the Premier League last season and Mark Hughes knows he must add if they are to steer clear of similar troubles in 2012/13. Hughes brought Nelsen to England in 2004 and is fully aware of what the burly New Zealander can bring to his squad.
