United defender never doubted champions' ability in title race

Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United never doubted their ability in the Premier League title race and hopes experience will see the reigning champions over the line. United have overhauled local rivals Manchester City at the summit in recent weeks and opened up an eight-point gap, potentially for just a few hours, with a 2-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday. The Red Devils have now won 11 of their last 12 league matches to close in on a record 20th title and have recovered from a 6-1 home thrashing by City back in October. "We didn't think about getting back into this position as we never doubted ourselves that we could put a run of games together and win games," Ferdinand told Sky Sports.

Momentum

"That's what we needed to do and you have to get momentum at this stage of the season. The most important thing is to make sure you get a run of good games together and win all your remaining games. "We've ticked one off today and hopefully we can keep on going." United's squad boasts a wealth of title-winning experience in comparison to City's and Ferdinand feels that could play a role in the closing weeks of the season. The defender added: "It's huge. We've been in this position before so that counts for a lot and we know what it takes to get over the finishing line. "We've got to use all that experience to make sure we do that again, but the young players are all putting their two-pence worth in. "It's a group effort, a team effort and everyone's contribution counts."
