Goalkeeper says Liverpool win has boosted survival hopes

Ali Al Habsi says the unlikely win against Liverpool at the weekend has swung the fight against relegation in Wigan's favour. The club are involved in a five-way fight to avoid being in the bottom three places at the end of the season with Blackburn, Bolton, Wolves and QPR. The vital three points put the Latics level with QPR, one behind Bolton and safety and a solitary victory behind Blackburn who they still have to play as well as rock bottom Wolves. And the goalkeeper wants more of the same from the players and the fans when Stoke are the visitors to the DW Stadium this weekend if they are to repeat their Houdini act of last season. "Of course we can do it," Al Habsi told the Evening Post. "We have another eight cup finals to go and the performance at Liverpool will hopefully give us the push we need. "The fans were amazing on Saturday and we'll need them again this weekend against Stoke. "One big push is all we need to stay in this division - we did it last year and I'm sure we can do it again." Shaun Maloney and Gary Caldwell scored either side of an effort from Liverpool's Luis Suarez, who also had another ruled out, to seal a win that Al Habsi says he will never forget. But although the result may have come as a shock for many in football the goalkeeper believes it was about time that Wigan got a result to match their performances. "Saturday's result may have surprised a few people," he added. "But it has been coming. "We've been unlucky for a number of weeks, playing well and creating chances, but not managing to get our rewards. "But on Saturday we got the luck - and we got the win. To go to Anfield and help to make a little piece of history with Wigan is fantastic. "It's huge for everyone - for the players, the manager, the fans, the whole football club. "It was my best moment in football."
