Sky Sports understands Burnley are favourites to sign former Chelsea midfielder Jacob Mellis ahead of rival Championship clubs.
Mellis left Chelsea on Tuesday by mutual consent after he admitted to setting off a smoke grenade at the club's training ground earlier this month.
The 21-year-old made just one substitute's appearance in the UEFA Champions League during his Chelsea career and had loan spells at Southampton and Barnsley.
He impressed during his stint at Barnsley in the second half of last season and appears poised to secure a return to the Championship.
Brighton & Hove Albion and Bristol City are understood to have shown an interest in Mellis, but Burnley are in pole position to agree a deal.
Mellis has linked up for training with Eddie Howe's squad this week as the Clarets boss looks to add another young talent to his Turf Moor ranks.
