Baggies skipper says club has come a long way under manager

West Brom skipper Chris Brunt believes it is vital for Roy Hodgson to stay at the club if they are to keep progressing. The Baggies were battling relegation when Hodgson took charge a year ago but in the end they staved off the drop with some comfort. There have been ups and downs this season but a recent run of excellent form, including Saturday's 1-0 victory over Chelsea, has propelled West Brom into the top half of the table. Hodgson's future remains unclear, though, as he is only under contract until the end of the season and has been linked with other jobs such as the vacant England role. Brunt has enjoyed working with Hodgson and expects the club to keep hold of him as they build for the future. The midfielder said: "Roy has done very well since he came here and has got the lads on board with what he wants to do. "You can see the desire the lads have to play for the manager. The results he's had in his time at the club have shown that.

Major factor

"The lads want him to stay. Look at the job he has done since he came here. I'm sure he'd like to stay but you'll have to ask him. "There is no reason why we can't keep progressing but he is a major factor in that." Brunt believes the weekend victory against Chelsea provided ample evidence of how far Albion have developed. He said: "The win over Chelsea shows how far we've come since I've been at the club. It shows the progression we've made as a club. "I think it was half expected after the previous results we had and it wasn't a lucky win. We were the better side for long spells."
