Alessandro Del Piero will spend the night in hospital after being kicked in the face during Juventus' 2-0 win over Cesena on Sunday.
The Juve captain had to be carried from the field on a stretcher just eight minutes after coming off the bench, with blood streaming down his face.
The incident occurred during a challenge with Cesena defender Marco Rossi.
The veteran striker received eight stiches before being transferred to hospital for further scans.
A club statement said: "He never lost consciousness and the wound was sewn up at the stadium with eight stitches.
"Our captain will however be taken to hospital for the normal controls."
