United ace hails job well done against minnows

Wayne Rooney says he had no problem stepping into midfield for Manchester United as they ground out a 2-0 win over minnows Otelul Galati in the UEFA Champions League. Antonio Valencia put them ahead with an eighth minute tap-in but it took until three minutes from the end for United to get their second when Rooney's long-range shot took a huge deflection off Cristian Sarghi. The England international impressed after Sir Alex Ferguson deployed him in an unusual central midfield role rather than his usual position up front. He told Sky Sports HD2: "I played there a lot when I was younger and it's something which means you get a lot of the ball and we had to defend at times as well tonight. The manager asked me to do it and I'm happy to do it. "I've said before I feel I'm a good enough footballer to play anywhere on the pitch. "I'm not being big-headed, I feel I am capable of doing that and if the manager wants me to play there, I've no problem doing that."

On course

Rooney hailed a job well done after United came away with the three points to keep them firmly on course for the knockout rounds. He said: "We've come and done a job tonight. We know in the Champions League there are no easy games, they came to defend and pressed quite high up, which was quite surprising. "But it was 2-0 and we know if we win the next home game we'll win the group." As for the heavily-deflected goal, Rooney added: "I think it's mine! "I had a shot and I'm sure the lad won't want it down as an own goal, so we'll see. It would be nice to get it but I'll wait and see what is decided."
