Werder Bremen striker could return against Cologne this weekend

X-rays have confirmed that Werder Bremen striker Claudio Pizarro's foot injury is not as bad as first feared. The Peruvian could be back in action for the weekend's Bundesliga clash against Cologne after he suffered severe bruising last weekend. There were concerns that he was set for a spell on the sidelines after the impact of the injury tore a hole through his boot. His return will be a relief for manager Thomas Schaaf, as it is Pizarro's goals that have helped them reach fourth place in the German top flight this season. The former Chelsea striker scored his 150th German league goal at the weekend and is happy to have had his fears allayed.

Bruising

He told the club's official website: "It was not as bad as thought, I have some bruising, but it's much better, I can walk normally now. "I hope to be able to train with the team again on Thursday. "I am delighted that I don't have to sit in front of the television anymore and that I can now help the team on the field. "I have to give 100 per cent in training and convince the coach to pick me on Saturday."
