Teenage defender prepared to put playing time before big move

Highly-rated Lens defender Raphael Varane has reiterated that he will not be moving for the sake of it. The 18-year-old is considered to be among the hottest prospects in European football, having burst onto the scene in Ligue 1. His undoubted potential has not gone unnoticed, with the continent's top clubs keeping close tabs on his progress. The latest reports suggest Manchester United are preparing to bid around £9million for the teenager, while Real Madrid are also readying an approach. Varane, though, is aware that his development would be better served by regular first-team football and feels it may be too early for him to make a high-profile move.

Choice

He is prepared to consider a switch to England or Spain but has made it clear that he would have to be given certain guarantees regarding playing time first. "I know I have the choice," said Varane. "I can move abroad or I could join another club in Ligue 1 [France's top division]. "What interests me is playing regularly, so I have to think carefully and go to a club that will allow me to progress."
