Midfielder ecstatic following Posh promotion

Grant McCann was delighted after his goal against Huddersfield helped Peterborough seal promotion to the Championship on Sunday. The League One playoff final at Old Trafford was goalless up until the 78th minute, when Tommy Rowe finally broke the deadlock. Craig Mackail-Smith scored two minutes later and skipper McCann netted with a fantastic free-kick soon afterwards to secure a 3-0 victory and book the Posh a spot in the second tier next term. Midfielder McCann was thrilled with the result after Peterborough missed out on automatic promotion to Brighton and Southampton. "We were unfortunate not to go up automatically, we just slipped off towards the end," said McCann. "But it's the best way to win, in the playoffs. It's the third time I've done it now and I'm just over the moon. "That's the best free-kick I've ever hit. I'm over the moon with it."

Crucial

Huddersfield put Peterborough under pressure at the start of the second period but could find no way through. Mackail-Smith, who has enjoyed a stunning campaign at London Road and is expected to leave in the summer, hailed his team-mates for withstanding the onslaught and then bagging the crucial win. "What a day for the supporters and the boys," he said. "It's fantastic. "The first half we worked hard and maybe should have scored a couple but we came under a bit of pressure and the boys were fantastic. "The back four were unbelievable to keep them out, and then at the other end we've got people that can score goals."
