Adkins happy to add promising full-back to St Mary's ranks

Southampton have completed the signing of promising teenager Jack Stephens for a fee of £150,000 from Plymouth Argyle. Skysports.com revealed last week that Southampton had made a move for the full-back after Stephens recently rejected the chance to join Premier League side Fulham. He has now agreed a three-year contract with Saints and will spend the remainder of this season as part of the club's development squad. Stephens is tipped for a bright future and Southampton boss Nigel Adkins is happy to have secured the 17-year-old's services.

Finger on the pulse

"At the end of the day, what we are trying to do is make sure we have good young talent at this football club," Adkins told the club's official website. "Plymouth are in a scenario at the moment where I am sure they don't want to lose any of their players, but we are out there actively working very hard to try and improve the group of players that we have got coming through the system. "He has been on the radar for a while. We have a good scouting department here in charge of talent identification which is managed by David Burke. "They go out and they have their finger on the pulse of all the young players in the country, and he is a young talented one that will come in and help the development players that we have here."
