Midfielder reaches appearance landmark in win over Czechs

Spain midfielder Xavi has admitted it was a special feeling to make his 100th international appearance on Friday night. The Barcelona playmaker brought up the milestone as Spain kept their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign on track with a 2-1 victory over Czech Republic. He later spoke of his pride at having enjoyed such a long career at the highest level, after making his Spain debut back in 2000. "I am very happy," he told reporters. "I never believed I would arrive here but with work anything is possible."

Tough game

Xavi was also thrilled to pick up a valuable three points after Jaroslav Plasil's opening goal had given Czech Republic hope of causing an upset. David Villa struck twice to become Spain's record goalscorer and turn the game on its head in the second half. "The match was not easy and Plasil's goal made it complicated," said Xavi. "But Spain have quality and force. Our reaction was positive because we dominated the game and the goals finally arrived." Xavi also paid tribute to Barcelona team-mate Villa, saying: "He is a top striker and I am happy to play with him."
