Pardew tips Enrique for Spain

Alan Pardew feels a call-up to the Spain national side would be 'a fitting tribute' for Jose Enrique.

Toon boss backing left-back for international call-up

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew feels a call-up to the Spain national side would be 'a fitting tribute' for star left-back Jose Enrique following his superb work this season. The 25-year-old has been a key performer for the Toon this term, most recently impressing at Blackburn with a solid attacking display in Saturday's 0-0 draw. And although world and European champions Spain are yet to come knocking, Pardew feels a call-up would be fully deserved. "Possibly that would be a fitting tribute for him to get into that squad," Pardew told Sky Sports News. "It's a tough squad because they're an outstanding team. But he's showing the sort of form that could get him in that squad, no problem." Pardew believes Enrique's recent form singles him out as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

Terrific

"There aren't too many who can hold a candle to him at the moment with the form he's in," he added. "If he was the opposition you'd have to start worrying about him defensively because he keeps coming at you. "Let alone the other assets we have in the team offensively, you have to look after our left-back, because he'll raid and raid all day. He's been terrific for us." Enrique, who arrived on Tyneside from Villarreal in 2007, is in the final 18 months of his deal at St James' Park, and has said he will not extend his contract unless the Magpies secure Premier League survival this season. Pardew refused to be drawn on speculation regarding the stopper's future, saying simply: "We're prepared for everything. It's always difficult, you want to keep your best players."
