Magpies midfielder out for good start

Newcastle United midfielder Alan Smith has admitted he is relishing the prospect of facing former club Manchester United at the start of the season. The 29-year-old spent three seasons with the Red Devils before moving to St James' Park in 2007 and he was one of the key members of the team in their Championship winning year. The Magpies kick off their return to the Premier League at Old Trafford on 16th August in what will be one of their toughest fixtures of the campaign. Smith however was looking forward to the game despite still being in the early stages of pre-season training, insisting that they can enjoy a strong year in the top division.

Special

"Going back to any of your previous clubs is always a special moment," Smith told the club's official website. "And having got back into the Premier League, Manchester United away is a nice one to start with. "We're looking forward to the Premier League knowing that we need to be fitter and stronger, and the lads have come back focused and in good shape ready for the new season. "We're quietly confident inside the camp about what we can achieve and we've got to do ourselves proud and carry the momentum with us from last season."
