Potters goalkeeper believes he was right to snub Spurs

Asmir Begovic feels he made the right decision in choosing Stoke City over Tottenham Hotspur. The Bosnian goalkeeper was in the fortunate position of having a number of options to consider during the January transfer window, as he edged towards the exits at Portsmouth. Spurs initially led the chase for his services, with former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp keen to be reunited with Begovic at White Hart Lane. However, despite undergoing a medical in North London, the 22-year-old shot-stopper eventually opted for a switch to Stoke, believing first-team opportunities would be easier to come by with the Potters. Begovic told The Sentinel: "There were talks with Tottenham and I was having a medical. But I never agreed personal terms with them. I was just told to go to the medical because I was sold. "But it wasn't that close in my mind. It was flattering to have Tottenham and other teams interested in me, but I think this was the better move for me. "Once I knew I was leaving Portsmouth, I saw what options were available. I spoke to Mark O'Connor (Stoke's first-team coach), who sold the club to me and I think it was the right move for me at this stage in my career."

Competition

Begovic has admitted to being aware that Croatia No.1 Stipe Pletikosa was also in talks with Spurs at the same time as him, but insists his presence had no bearing on his decision to snub a move to the capital. He said: "I didn't see him, but I think he was there at the same time. I did the medical and had a chance to speak to my representatives. "Stoke were interested in me and it was serious so I decided to wait it out and hopefully let this move happen." Begovic is now hoping to oust Thomas Sorensen from Tony Pulis' first-team plans at Stoke, but admits there is plenty he can learn from the experienced Dane while he waits his turn. "I am playing in the reserves so will see what happens and try to put pressure on him and wait for my chance to come," he added. "He is very good, very experienced and very calm. He has all the tools. "We are in competition, but I can also learn from him. He is older than me, has played a lot more games and has more experience. I want to learn from him and try to get in the first team as well."
