Gers boss believes squad is big enough for second half of season

Rangers boss Walter Smith is not looking to strengthen his squad in January after giving winger Jerome Rothen permission to leave. Smith brought in the Paris St Germain winger on loan on transfer deadline day in September but is not considering a similar move this time around. The Gers boss believes he has a big enough squad for the second half of the season after the comeback from long-term absences of Kirk Broadfoot and Maurice Edu and the forthcoming return of Pedro Mendes. Smith said: "The group we've got now is big enough as long as we've got no injury problems.

Last minute

"When I brought him (Rothen) in, it was at the last minute, because we were faced with a situation where we knew we were going to have at least two, maybe three players out for almost the entire first half of the season. "But we've got everybody back fit again so, for us, we'll go through the season without bringing anyone in." Former France international Rothen, 31, has failed to make any impact following his September move. He has not played since the UEFA Champions League humiliation at the hands of Unirea Urziceni on 20th October and returned to Paris last month after falling ill with what was initially reported to be swine flu.
Way out
He is reportedly seeking a way out of his season-long loan to Ibrox and Smith has no intention of stopping him. "We can let him go, come to an arrangement with him," he said. "It's one of those things that hasn't worked out for us, although the lad is ill at the present moment. "If he wants to go back in the transfer window, we'll allow him to go back and go and play in France for the second half of the season."
