Bayern express desire to keep veteran keeper at Allianz Arena

Bayern Munich director of sport Christian Nerlinger wants veteran goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt to sign a new contract at the Allianz Arena. The 35-year-old signed from Benfica on a free transfer in June 2008 and his current deal runs until next June. The former Germany keeper was originally signed by Bayern as a back-up to Michael Rensing but became first choice in the spring of this year. He has since continued as first-team goalkeeper under new coach Louis van Gaal and the club would like to extend his stay.

True character

Nerlinger told spox.com: "He is a true character and performs very solidly. At Bayern Munich performances are always honoured and Jorg has performed really great this season." Butt, who scored a penalty against Juventus on Tuesday as the German side progressed to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, has previously expressed his desire to stay on at Bayern and said he would consider a new contract offer very carefully. He said: "I have yet to think about this, but I can well imagine staying beyond the coming summer. "Keeping my fitness remains most important for me, as well as keeping on helping the team with good displays."
