Owls boss keen to extend striker's stay at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws has announced the club are holding discussions with Derby over the future of on-loan striker Luke Varney. Varney has found the net on three occasions for the Owls since arriving from Pride Park in August but his scoring record at Hillsborough is soon to come to an end as the forward's loan spell is due to finish in January. Laws is desperate to hold onto the 27-year-old but told a fans' forum that financial restraints could be a stumbling block to extending Varney's stay in the Steel City. "We're in discussions with Derby, we spoke to them on Tuesday," said Laws, who also revealed earlier he unsuccessfully tried to lure several Arsenal youngsters to Yorkshire. "We've still got to have discussions about what they want to do with the player, bearing in mind he's got two and a bit years left on his contract." Laws revealed he had informed Derby boss Nigel Clough of the lack of funds, adding: "We'd be happy to keep Luke Varney but we haven't got any money."
