Striker snubs loan offers to fight for spot

Skysports.com understands Southampton starlet Matthew Paterson has rejected offers to go out on loan to stay at St Mary's. Reports earlier this week claimed Torquay were closing in on the signing of the 20-year-old as they looked to link him up with Southampton team-mate Jake Thomson. Gillingham were also thought to be keen on signing the highly-rated forward, but Paterson has snubbed their overtures to stay at Southampton. Paterson is keen to fight for his place in Alan Pardew's side having been restricted to eight appearances this term. Paterson is expected to reassess his situation in January if he fails to get a regular run of games in the starting XI.
