Striker fails to win long-term deal

Darren Byfield has been released by Oldham after failing to earn a long-term contract at Boundary Park. The 32-year-old striker joined the Latics on a short-term deal earlier this month and made four appearances, but failed to find the net. Oldham have since brought in Nick Blackman on loan from Blackburn, pushing Byfield down the pecking order. Latics boss Dave Penney opted against offering the former Aston Villa and Bristol City man a long-term deal. "We'd like to thank Darren for his efforts while with us," said Penney. "However, we need to channel our team's resources and the style we play in a different direction."
