Steve Evans eager to start fit-again Danny Ward for Rotherham

Rotherham boss Steve Evans is desperate to give fit-again striker Danny Ward a start after two substitute appearances.

The 24-year-old missed five games with foot and knee injuries but has featured off the bench in the last two matches - a victory over Brighton and defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Evans is keen to restore Ward to his starting XI and only opted to keep him on the bench at the Riverside on advice from his medical team.

"It was good to see Danny Ward get another 20/25 minutes," he said. "That was crucial in this period of getting Danny back.

"People can be frustrated and want to see Wardy start, Steve Evans wants to see him start, but I also have to go on medical advice."

Evans did hand a start to Richard Wood against Boro following his recall from a loan spell at League One Crawley.

It was the central defender's first Millers appearance since January and Evans thought he did well.

"I thought he was very good," Evans said. "I thought he had one or two little misplaced volleys in the first half but other than that he's won his headers.

"It's a hell of a difference from League One who he played against at Boro, Bamford, Kike, Tomlin, Adomah.

"I thought Richard did really well, and Kirk Broadfoot next to him was outstanding."

Wood's afternoon was almost soured when he conceded a late penalty, but his boss was willing to forgive him after keeper Emi Martinez saved Partick Bamford's effort.

"I ignore the penalty late on. Richard Wood will have been tired," he added. "There's a difference between playing in League One and the Championship.

"There's no disputing the penalty. He's tired and he's dived in."
