Wigan Athletic have signed Hull City central defender Harry Maguire on a short-term loan deal until March 17.

The 21-year-old England U21 international joined the Tigers for £2.5m from Sheffield United last summer but is yet to start a game in the Premier League.

He has made three substitute appearances in the top flight for Hull and another appearance off the bench in the Capital One Cup, with his only start so far coming in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat at Arsenal last month.

Maguire had previously featured 166 times for the Blades after making his debut shortly after his 18th birthday.

Wigan manager Malky Mackay said: “We are losing Liam Ridgewell after Wednesday’s match (against Nottingham Forest) and it was important we moved fast to replace him.

"Harry is someone I have admired for a long time and I thank Steve (Bruce) for allowing him to continue his development with us.

“He’s a powerful player with a lot of experience for his age and he fits the profile of the players we want to bring in; young, hungry and desperate to play.”
