Schalke forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has been banned for six matches following his red card at the weekend, although his club are to appeal the decision.
The Dutchman lunged dangerously at Hannover's Manuel Schmiedebach, not getting anywhere near the ball in the centre of the field during the Royal Blues' 1-0 win over the Reds at the weekend.
He was shown a straight red card and the German Football Association (DFB) on Monday sanctioned an exemplary six-game ban.
It was Huntelaar's first ever straight red card in the Bundesliga, but his otherwise good conduct does not appear to have been taken into consideration with a hefty ban ordered.
His club have announced via Twitter that they will appeal the DFB's decision.
Whether or not they are successful in reducing the ban, Huntelaar will certainly miss Tuesday night's trip to Bayern Munich.
He also stands to miss games against Borussia Monchengladbach, Eintracht Frankfurt, Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim.
If the ban is not reduced, his next league game will be the trip to Hertha Berlin in mid-March, although he will be eligible for Schalke's Champions League clash with Real Madrid on February 18.
