Gareth Bale says it was well worth spending time "in limbo" last summer as he waited to join Real Madrid from Tottenham.

The Wales international winger became the most expensive footballer in history when the Spanish club paid Spurs a transfer fee of £85.3million.

Madrid had been chasing the 25-year-old all summer, but it was only late in the window that they could reach an agreement with Tottenham.

When you are in limbo between two clubs, it’s not the greatest feeling in the world but if you want to move, you have to go through that sometimes.

Bale struggled with injuries at the start of his Madrid career, but soon gained momentum and established himself as one of the best player in Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

The former Southampton star scored 15 goals and provided 12 assists in 27 La Liga appearances, and netted six goals and created four in Los Blancos’ successful Champions League campaign.

Bale, who also scored the winning goal in the Copa del Rey final against arch-rivals Barcelona, believes that he made the right decision in moving to the 10-time European champions when he had the chance.

“It’s nice now to sit back and just watch the transfers,” he told the Daily Mail. “When you are settled somewhere, you can enjoy it - but it was the complete opposite 12 months ago. I was still at home waiting to come here.

Here's what you can expect from Real Madrid's Gareth Bale this season on Sky Sports 5

“When you are in limbo between two clubs, it’s not the greatest feeling in the world but if you want to move, you have to go through that sometimes.

“I made the right decision last year. To win two trophies last season and then the European Super Cup in Cardiff shows that.”

Bale added: “I love the weather (in Spain) - still being in vests and shorts for training instead of tracksuit bottoms and tops is great - and I love the food, especially the Spanish ham.

"I order plates of the stuff. I feel very happy out here. And I’m enjoying my football, which is the most important thing.”
