New Wolfsburg signing Daniel Caligiuri is facing a spell on the sidelines after tearing ligaments in his right ankle.

The midfielder, who joined the Wolves from Freiburg this summer, could miss the start of the season after a scan revealed the extent of the damage after a fall in training yesterday.

However, the worst fears that he could be ruled out for several months were not confirmed.

"Fortunately, it's nothing too serious," said coach Dieter Hecking. "I hope he won't be out for too long.

"It's a shame that Daniel has picked up this injury because he had slotted into the side very well recently."

Such an injury usually requires a six-week recovery period, compared to six months had the ligaments been torn completely.

"I feared the worst to begin with and thought it had been totally torn," said Caligiuri.
