Dutch defender heads home after six years in England

Eredivisie outfit VVV Venlo have snapped up Marcel Seip as a free agent, with the experienced defender set to pen a one-year contract. The 30-year-old Dutchman is heading home after six years in England. He left Heerenveen for Plymouth Argyle in 2006 and made over 130 appearances for the club during his time on the South Coast. Seip also took in loan spells at Blackpool, Sheffield United and Charlton Athletic while with the Pilgrims. He joined Bradford City in October 2011 on an initial three-month deal, but ended up seeing out the season with the League Two outfit.

Green light

Venlo, who claim to have seen off competition from Poland and Turkey for Seip, have now offered him a route back to his roots and will put the finishing touches to his homecoming once he has passed a medical. "Marcel Seip, who has trained with the VVV Venlo selection since Tuesday 3 July, was offered a contract on 15 July from the Venlo club," read a statement on the club's official website. "The 30-year old defender still needs to be given the medical green light, and is set to sign a contract which will bind him to the Venlo club for one season. "Seip, who was out of contract, played last season for English team Bradford City. He has previously played for the likes of Plymouth Argyle, SC Heerenveen and BV Veendam. "In addition to VVV Venlo, a Polish and Turkish club from the highest level showed interest in the defender."
