Latics skipper feels teenager can continue to develop at Boundary Park

Oldham Athletic captain Dean Furman has urged highly-rated team-mate David Mellor to remain at Boundary Park for the foreseeable future. The 18-year-old midfielder has caused a stir this season with a string of impressive performances for the Latics. The League One outfit's resolve has already been tested, with a £300,000 bid, reportedly from Premier League club Fulham, turned down, but several other clubs are thought to be monitoring the former Manchester United trainee. However, Furman is adamant that Oldham is the perfect place for Mellor to continue to develop his game further.

Brilliant

"David has been brilliant since breaking into the side earlier this season, but we all knew in-house what he was all about and how good he was," Furman told skysports.com. "He has got a great left foot and has stepped up from the youth team without too many problems. "He is great when on the ball and gives us great width down the left, plus he is very versatile as well because he can slot in to a number of positions if needed. "Obviously, there is a lot of interest in him and that is great for the lad, but we want to keep him here and help him flourish further."
