McCoist plans further moves for defenders

Rangers boss Ally McCoist has confirmed they have tabled a bid for Espanyol defender Raul Rodriguez. The Gers are thought to have offered £400,000 for Rodriguez as they look to lure the 23-year-old to Ibrox. McCoist is waiting to hear back from Espanyol on the offer and he admits he is planning further bids for more defensive reinforcements. Rodriguez only broke into the Espanyol side last season but the Gers gaffer is convinced he can be a success at Ibrox. "A bid has gone into Espanyol but we haven't heard anything back from them yet," McCoist told the Daily Record. "We need cover and hopefully Rodriguez would give us that. I'd hope he could go straight into our team but we'd need to have a look at him first. "That's the only bid we have in at the moment but there will be more during the next 24 hours. "I'll know in the next couple of days whether we've been successful with other targets but we're hopeful. It's safe to say Rodriguez won't be the last defender we go for."

Backing

Rangers have made only one new signing this summer in the shape of Juan Manuel Ortiz, but McCoist insists he will be backed by owner Craig Whyte in the transfer market this summer. "I'm absolutely getting the backing. There's no doubt about that and there's not a problem there," added McCoist. "I've been on the phone to Craig two or three times a day in Germany and he's taking a great interest as you'd expect. "There are no problems there and, believe me, he's just as keen to get new faces in as we all are. "We have to get it right and we will. The fans will see new players in."
