In-demand defender opts for move to Estadio El Sardinero

Racing Santander have won the race to sign Marc Torrejon from Espanyol. The central defender had a plethora of clubs, reportedly including Everton, vying for his signature, but has opted to choose the challenge offered by the Cantabiran outfit. Torrejon revealed that he had harboured the desire to leave Espanyol throughout last term as he struggled with his form and to earn a regular place in the team. "The past year was not especially good for me and my idea was to leave and my main options were Mallorca and Racing," he told reporters. "The coach here spoke to me and gave me a lot of confidence. Now I just want to work hard and to give everything to the club." Racing president Francisco Pernia was delighted to have sealed the 23-year-old's signature, having already signed Jose Angel Crespo from Sevilla and Panathinaikos' Nasief Morris to bolster their defence. "This has all turned out well because all these signings are the ones that the club, the coaches and the team wanted," he explained. "We are building a team that can do things this season."
