Brora Rangers had their dream of becoming the first new club to join the Scottish leagues since 2012, when they were beaten 3-1 by Montrose in the play-offs.

The Highland League side led the tie 1-0 from the first leg, but were beaten by goals from Scott Johnston, Marvin Andrews and Garry Wood.

Colin Maclean had given Brora hope when he levelled just after the interval, but the visitors were reduced to 10 men two minutes later when Steven Mackay was dismissed.

Johnston fired Montrose into the lead and level on aggregate from close range after his initial effort was saved on 38 minutes.

Maclean restored Brora’s advantage in the tie three minutes after half time when he powered a header into the top corner from an Ally MacDonald free-kick.

But with the dust still settling, the game took another twist when Mackay picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Graham Webster.

Defender Andrews powered a header home 13 minutes from time when Andrew Steeves delivered the ball from a Montrose corner.

And 90 seconds later Wood secured the victory when he crashed a shot from 35 yards into the top corner.

Meanwhile, Queen’s Park will remain in League Two with Montrose next season after they drew 1-1 with Stehousemuir in the second leg of their play-off.

Colin McMenamin put the League One side ahead after three minutes when he glanced the ball into the net at a corner to double Stehousemuir’s advantage in the tie.

Queen’s Park pulled a goal back just before the hour when Shaun Fraser bundled the ball over the line, but the Glasgow side could not find a way back into the match.
