Charlton draw level on points with fourth-placed Stoke

Charlton's Luke Varney struck a fine brace to seal a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at The Valley. The Addicks were in control for large periods of the game and finally made their dominance pay with Varney netting two second-half goals. The visitors began the brighter and threatened to take an early lead via Mark Hudson's excellent delivery from corner-kicks. Charlton weathered the storm, though, and soon began to enjoy the majority share of possession. Greg Halford was presented with a decent opportunity, but goalkeeper Julian Speroni parried away his stabbed effort.

Minutes later, Halford was in the thick of the action once more, blasting wide after he found himself one-on-one with Speroni. The Argentine shot-stopper then saved Zheng Zhi's effort, before Varney saw his placed strike come back off the post. Five minutes into the second half Charlton finally broke the deadlock when Varney powered his way into the box to flick the ball into the net. Palace rallied for a leveller, with manager Neil Warnock bringing on strikers Dougie Freedman and Shefki Kuqi. But an equaliser proved out of reach as Varney sealed the success firing home after cutting in from the left-hand channel.
