Charlton upsets Clarets

Goals from Simon Charlton and Darren Huckerby ensured Norwich continued their renaissance with a 2-1 win over high-flying Burnley at Carrow Road.

City started well and only a block from Michael Duff prevented Paul McVeigh's sweetly struck cross causing havoc in the visitors' defence.

McVeigh then took matters into his own hands but fired wide before Simon Charlton chanced his arm from 30 yards.

The lead, that Norwich's superior start merited, did arrive just after the quarter hour mark and it was from the unlikely source of Charlton.

Youssef Safri's quick free kick caught The Clarets napping and, after taking a touch, Charlton beat goalkeeper Brian Jensen via a deflection.

Amid a gathering snowstorm, The Canaries doubled the lead five minutes before half time through Darren Huckerby. Having been played in by Dean Ashton, Huckerby curled the ball into the top corner of the net to leave Jensen helpless.

Chances came and went in the second half before The Clarets got a foothold in proceedings when Jon Harley's shot ballooned off Safri and into the back of the net.

The home side always looked the more likely scorers and substitute Leon McKenzie could have put some gloss on the scoreline but missed from six yards.

Canaries manager Nigel Worthington will be left to count the cost of this victory, however, after he lost both Ashton and McKenzie to injury in the second half.
