Sampdoria picked up their first win of the new season with a 2-0 victory over Torino at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Manolo Gabbiadini put Samp in front with a direct free-kick in the 34th minute and former Fulham forward Stefano Okaka sealed victory 10 minutes from time with an outstanding individual effort.

Defeat leaves Torino languishing with just one point from their first two games of the season, ahead of their Europa League bow against Club Brugge on Thursday.

The midday heat did not help the spectacle in the first half with neither side, for the most part, doing much more than just going through the motions.

Samp did have the better of the game, though, and it was they who took the lead in the 34th minute.

Kamil Glik fouled Gabbiadini just on the edge of the area and his low free-kick beat Daniele Padelli into the bottom left-hand corner.

Gabbiadini continued to pose the greatest threat with a shot from 25 yards which curled just over Padelli's crossbar before he went even closer with another free-kick.

This time, he chose power over precision and his effort cleared the wall and rattled the crossbar with Padelli again beaten.

Torino coach Giampiero Ventura sent on Amauri to try to give more weight to his attack and not long after, former Samp forward Fabio Quagliarella - who had partnered Amauri at Juventus - went down in the area claiming a penalty.

The referee's whistle sounded after a few seconds, but not to sanction a spot-kick but instead to show a yellow card to the protesting Omar El Kaddouri.

Samp could not feel comfortable until they got a second goal, but that duly arrived in the 80th minute with Okaka's memorable effort.

After picking up the ball out wide near the halfway line, he got his head down and held off Emiliano Moretti, showing excellent strength and then a fine touch to nudge the ball past Glik before keeping his composure with Moretti tugging at his shirt to sweep a low shot past Padelli into the far corner.

After such a run, he could not continue and was replaced to a standing ovation by the home crowd, who continued their celebrations at their side's first win of the season.
