Son guns down Augsburg

Son Heung-Min helped get Bayer Leverkusen back to winning ways with the only goal of the game against Augsburg.

The South Korean netted just before a storm led to a short delay in play, and Augsburg were unable to find a way back into the game in trying conditions.

As a result, the Bavarians saw their two-game winning streak brought to an abrupt end as Leverkusen moved up to second in the standings, just a point behind Bayern Munich.

The guests suffered a setback on the half-hour mark when Sascha Molders was unable to continue and he was replaced by Caiuby, forcing coach Markus Weinzierl into an early reshuffle.

Soon after, things turned even worse when Son put the hosts in front.

Roberto Hilbert, a late addition to the starting XI due to an injury to Gonzalo Castro, sent a perfect pass through for the forward, who was able to settle himself and send his shot past Marwin Hitz into the far corner.

Five minutes later, referee Guido Winkmann took the teams off with an intense electrical storm putting the players' safety at risk.

After a break of about 10 minutes, the teams returned with the rain still streaming down, but at least no lightning in the vicinity of the BayArena.

The break appeared to do Augsburg more good than Leverkusen, and allowed Weinzierl to get his ideas across with his new playing personnel.

Caiuby could have brought them level early in the second half when he beat the offside trap to latch on to Halil Altintop's pass, but his angled shot was pushed away by Bernd Leno.

The Bavarians started to take more risks, leaving gaps which Stefan Kiessling and Karim Bellarabi both almost exploited, but ensuring Leverkusen could not just sit on their one-goal lead.

There was a frenetic ending to the game, but no further goals as Leverkusen held on to a win which takes them up to second, a point behind Bayern, while Augsburg slip back down to 11th with their third defeat of the season.
