Scottish Premiership: Kilmarnock hold on at Hamilton Academical

Kilmarnock and Hamilton Academical shared the spoils in a goalless draw as both teams continued their winless run in the Scottish Premiership.

It was a spirited display from the visitors at New Douglas Park as they more than matched their opponents, sitting three places above them in fifth, and testament to the players and managerial staff performing just 24 hours after the sudden exit of manager Allan Johnston.

The game may have been missing goals but the contest began in lively fashion and it was the hosts who almost opened the scoring in the first attack with Craig Samson shutting out Grant Gillespie after a flowing move from Darian MacKinnon and Danny Redmond.

The Accies may have been searching for their first win in over a month but they were looking sharp surging forward and they again wasted a great chance to take the lead in the 25th minute when Jason Scotland picked up Redmond's cute pass but he could only fire over.

Kilmarnock were certainly not without their own fireworks with lively striker Josh Magennis denied by the firm hands of Michael McGovern and, just before the interval, Rory McKenzie saw his shot curl wide of the target.

Hamilton, still finding their feet under new manager Martin Canning, seemed more cautious in the second half and were lucky not to concede on the hour as Magennis nodded Chris Chantler's cross just wide.

Ali Crawford and Jesus Garcia Ten both looked dangerous for Hamilton, while Killie picked up the pace with Tope Obadeyi and Magennis missing headers.

The Accies had a half-hearted penalty shout turned down late on when Manuel Pascali challenged Redmond but referee Alan Muir was not interested.

Seeing striker Nigel Hasselbaink, re-signed a few days ago, in the stands proved a rare high point of the afternoon for the Hamilton fans as they had to settle for a point with their team failing to win for a sixth consecutive game.
