Late Woolford winner sees Iron come from behind to beat Latics

A late Martyn Woolford winner helped Championship side Scunthorpe come from behind to beat Oldham in the Carling Cup. Djeny Bembo put the League One visitors ahead in the 23rd minute before Jonathan Forte equalised on 65 minutes. Woolford then won it with seven minutes remaining, although the Iron's victory gloss was tarnished somewhat with the dismissal of substitute Sam Togwell in injury time. The busy Forte had a penalty claim waved away in the first minute after he went down under a challenge from Jason Jarrett. The former Doncaster forward then had an excellent chance to open the scoring when he bolted clear of a static Oldham defence seven minutes in, only to be thwarted by the legs of goalkeeper Dean Brill. Oldham's composed possession football continued and they were rewarded after 23 minutes when a sweeping team move found Richie Jones in space on the right flank, with the former Manchester United trainee picking out Bembo who nodded home. Scunthorpe's final ball let them down continually after the break and when the equaliser came, it was predictably all Forte's own work. The striker outmuscled Jarrett in the air before racing onto the loose ball and dinking neatly beyond Brill. With 12 minutes left Oldham were inches away from a winner when Michael O'Connor hacked Dale Stephens' fizzed free-kick against the upright. That near miss prompted a flurry of pressure from Latics, but against the run of play Woolford slammed home from 20 yards after Jarrett had dispossessed Chris Dagnall, before Togwell was then sent-off at the death for a second bookable offence.
