Gillingham were defeated as Luton chipped away at their mammoth 30-point deficit with a 1-0 win at the Priestfield Stadium.

Mick Harford's side took a fourth-minute lead when an unmarked Sam Parkin headed Chris Martin's cross past helpless goalkeeper Alan Julian.

It was the least they deserved as the visitors bossed the early stages, with Martin and Rossi Jarvis causing havoc.

Gills were stung into action and their best effort of the first half came when Mark McCammon headed Barry Fuller's cross narrowly past the upright two minutes before the break.

The luckless McCammon then had a goalbound header cleared off the line by Sol Davis early in the second half.

Shortly afterwards Simeon Jackson fired high and wide from distance before visiting goalkeeper Dean Brill denied him twice from close range.

Livewire Martin nearly put the icing on the cake with a raid down the other end but Luton did enough.
